18.11.11 This weekend will see the final document of Wodwos recorded at Bedside Studio here in Winnipeg. Shortly thereafter Paul will don his NASA duds, and head out to space. Stay safe out there, pard. We'll miss ya.
04.10.11 Wrapping up a mix for The Great Sabatini today. Turned out great, I couldn't be more pleased! This year's send + receive festival begins tomorrow, and I will be recording the concerts as usual. Gonna be a noisy fest this year.
27.05.11 Recently Completed: Hard Charger "This Machine Is Driving" - LP/CD/Cassette/DL - soon to be released on No List Records. Wodwos "s/t" - LP - meandering free jazz noise rock springs forth from the woodwork. AM Overcast "Eyes Up" - CD/DL - Self released DIY-ADD pop musix. The best thing ever. Fuck The Facts "Die Miserable" - LP/CD - grindcore gave me arthritis. Up next - osteoperosis. Rebel Yell - "Social Studies" CD - punked out no-coast hiphop. Withdrawal "Faith, Flesh and Blood" - 7" EP - dark & grim hardcore done exceptionally well.
Coming up:
The Dreaming City See you in September!!
26.02.11 I just realized I forgot to mention a few interesting mastering projects that have come through my door lately. I recently worked on material from Calgary's Stawart Sons for two split releases (just finishing up the second one this weekend), as well as a new 7" record for Winnipeg's very own grunge darlings Self Interest.
22.02.11 The Withdrawal sessions went amazingly well. We triumphed in the face of floopiness, messed up coffee orders, computer problems, and stolen trucks. Nothing could keep us down. Click here or above to hear a song! In other news, I will be in Fredericton, New Brunswick next week making a record with Hard Charger on No List Records.
05.01.11 I'll be heading to Private Ear this weekend with the folks in Withdrawal to record their new 7" coming out on the A389 Recordings
imprint. Gonna be fun!! I'm pretty stoked to get into the studio again.
Through a weird fluke I've only been working on mixes for most of the
past year, and it will be nice to do some tracking.
23.11.10 As usual, I am painfully slow with the updates. It hurts. I'm sorry. Here's what's been going on lately: I'm currently mixing two records - one is my first-ever foray into hip hop - Rebel Yell's new album "Social Studies". The other is a new full-length from Fuck The Facts titled "Die Miserable". I've always wanted to work on a rap album, and it couldn't have come at a better time. When I get tired of grindcore, I just throw on the punk-hoppin' party music! How refreshing. Also in production are new records from Wolbachia and AM Overcast that will hopefully finally get completed in December. I recently finished mastering a double album for lo-fi whalecore darlings The Blowholes, and a new full length for the precedent-setting mincers in Archagathus. The Greber album came back from mastering the other week and I highly recommend that you stream it here, and then pre-order it here. On top of all that, the send + receive festival wrapped up on Sunday. I recorded all of the performances, as usual, but this year I was also organizing the technical details. It was definitely a challenge, but everything turned out really well in the end. According to tradition, my computer decided to kick the bucket in the middle of all this, which is awesome, as always. Sigh. On the plus side, it was so thoroughly broken that they've thrown in the towel and are going to giving me new one. I suppose I can't complain about that.
22.07.10 Ok, so the Greber mix didn't start until yesterday. I mean, five days ago. Fifteen? What day is it? Where am I? It's been a busy time. Oh well. I finally have some vocals in hand for two tracks on the Monkey album - It's sounding great and it's nice to finally hear these tunes with some crooning! A good number of mastering jobs are coming through the door lately - I'll be providing the finishing touches on records by Creeper, Still Fighting, Born Bad, and recently finished up an album for Fox Opera - a really awesome mathy pop band from Calgary. The tail end of summer and/or the begining of fall will hopefully see me in Saskatoon making a record or two.
04.06.10 I just started mixing a record for Greber, a new project of former Tugnut members Marc and Steve. An excellent drum kit and bass guitar concoction, full of vigor with a zesty aftertaste. Last weekend saw the completion of bed tracks for a bunch of new material from the cynical no-coast grindcore unit Wolbachia (featuring members of the now defunct Kursk). Everything is sounding great, but you'll have to wait for a little while to hear it because Brad will be heading out of town at the end of the month to tour Europe with Archagathus. Carry the torch high, my friend. The mix will begin when he returns. Also in the works this summer: New records for Prague, Masseuse, and possibly even L'viv.
20.03.10 I just got back from a trip through western Canada. First stop was Calgary, where I recorded an album for Mares Of Thrace. Not only did it turn out amazingly well, but it also just so happens that they are two of the most awesome people I've ever met. Double win! I then continued on to Vancouver where I met up with my pal Gord Smith to work on our new recording project called HEADTABLE. For this installment of the project we wrote six tunes in the grindcore style, and recorded five of them. They are awesome and you will love them. With any luck the material will be released as a split 7" on Gord's label Kill Bomb Records. Not entirely sure who the other band will be, but I will fill you in as details materialize. Now that I'm back in Winnipeg I'll be finishing up the new A.M. Overcast album, mastering a discography for the legendary mincecore band Archagathus, mixing a new full-length for Fuck The Facts (who are currently on tour in Europe), and working on the mix for the new Mares OfThrace album. Solid fun times. I love it.
26.01.10 I've been talking about it for a while, and I recently had some time to finally figure out a solution - there is now a fancy new streaming audio player in the audio section of the site!! Check it out and see how it works for you. If you come across any problems, please shoot me an email and I'll see if I can fix it. This is my first attempt at integrating Flash into my site, and I have no idea what I'm doing, so fingers crossed...
14.01.10 Why hello! It's been a busy winter here in Winnipeg... so busy that I entirely neglected updating the site for several months. Oh well. What's new? Well, let me tell you. The Monkey album is nearing completion and sounding really nice. I recently finished mixing a tour EP for Fuck The Facts, and will be mixing a full-length release for them around the end of January. They've decided to take matters into their own hands and take care of all the tracking themselves for this one. It's working pretty well, too - Topon has been sending me samples of their work so far, and it's sounding great. I recently started working on the new A.M. Overcast album, which is a total listening pleasure. Alex and I are pecking away at it between other projects, but it's coming together quickly and should be ready soon. I recently mixed one of the performances from last years edition of the send + receive festival - an evening of improvisation with Jeffrey Allport, Nate Wooley, and Ami Yoshida. It came together really quickly, and is a really beautiful listen. Not sure when it will be available for the masses, but it will hopefully be released sometime in the near future. Also on the horizon is a session with Tu Sufres, a new band here in Winnipeg.
27.09.09 Currently in the process of remixing Prague's first album "Preparation Meets Opportunity". Practically done and sounding real nice!! Finally. Darcy and I are also going to be recording a bunch of new material in the next couple weeks. Stay tuned for more details. We're also playing on October 28 with Creeper and Velodrome at the Albert. Come hang out and listen to some good music! This November I will be recording Monkey, a band from Calgary that contains former members of Lint. Also on the horizon: a double album (seriously) with the Blowholes, and a new Kursk full-length later this winter. It is almost time for send + receive, and in keeping with tradition I will be recording all of the performances of the festival. Make sure you check out some concerts as well as the various installations and artist talks throughout the week. The festival runs from October 13 - 17.
06.07.09 L'viv shall be playing this Friday at Ragpicker's with Red Hot Daggers, Gift Eaters, and Greenhouse. Gonna be rad, come on out and hear some awesome tunes!! Music at 9pm sharp. The Electric Candles session went really well and was a ton of fun. Had some issues with the tape machine, but it all panned out in the end. Last week I finished the demos for KEN mode's new album with Jesse. He's posted a couple of them on their myspace page, go give 'em a listen. The album's gonna be sick. The boys are also on tour, dates are up on myspace. In keeping with the times, I have created a facebook page for cb audio. You can check it out here, or from the link on the front page of this site.
09.06.09
I've been working on some demos with KEN mode for their upcoming album, Venerable. They're sounding great (as always), and you might even get a sneak peek at these tunes if you're lucky. The boys also just released a video for one of the tunes on their latest album, Mennonite . Later this month I'll be heading into the studio to record a few tunes with Electric Candles that might end up on an EP of some sort. Later this week Prague plays at War on Music with KEN mode and Kilbourne.
09.04.09 L'viv's new album has been recorded and is now in the mixing stage. To celebrate a job well done, we're playing a show with Hide Your Daughters and Haunter later this month. April 25th, to be exact. At the Albert. Where else? I'll keep you posted with details on the release and where you can go to hear some tracks. Recording-wise, I'll be hanging out with KEN mode to demo some new songs for their next full length. I'll also be heading out into the wilderness with Summer Of Legs later this spring. Or just staying in the city. More info to follow!
09.03.09 L'viv will be playing a show with Dirtbagger and Kronstadt 21 this Friday, March 13th at the Lo Pub. Speaking of Dirtbagger, this will be simultaneously their last show and cdr release of the recording we did last month. It turned out real nicely, so c'mon down, grab a copy, and listen to some good tunes.
22.01.09 Shows coming up! Feb 14 @ Ragpickers - Prague, Kursk, L'viv, Dirtbagger - 8pm - $6 Feb 20 @ The Royal Albert - Electro Quarterstaff, Evil Survives, L'viv And, in recording news... L'viv is gearing up to make a record at the end of March. We will be heading into the new and improved Private Ear Studios, with Rudy Rempel manning the controls. I'll also be working with The Gorgon on a track for the upcoming CKUW Fundrive Compilation. It just so happens I'll also be mastering the comp. Finally, later this spring I'll be making a record with Dirtbagger, an experimental duo from here in Winnipeg.
28.11.08 Well, send + receive went off without a hitch this year. Good times, good listening, interesting workshops, and nice people from all over the world. We are currently working on the s+r 10th anniversary DVD release, which will hopefully be available by next summer. It will include a boatload of amazing performances from past 10 years of send + receive, a video installment, and information about the history of the festival. send + receive is currently accepting applications to fill positions on our Board of Directors. This is an excellent opportunity to become involved in the festival. If you would like more information, drop me a line. Three new tunes up in the audio section! Check it out!
18.09.08 Ok, news page fixed. Check. KEN mode & Fuck The Facts tunes coming up soon. Although, I'm sure you've already heard the news... L'viv obviously didn't record last march, but we're hoping for sometime in the winter part of the new year. No promises, though.
25.04.08 Well, I messed up the news page something fierce by using an online html editor. Oops. Looks like I won't be able to get things back to normal until I visit my own computer again in the fall. Oh well. I'm sure you all can live without the cbaudio news archive for a few months.
In the meantime, I have a new Velodrome tune for ya! Check it out in the audio section. Thanks Dave!
17.04.08 Things are wrapping up nicely. Fuck The Facts' new album Disgorge Mexico is finally done, and I mean done. Like, seriously, done. Not without a last minute emergency, though. Thanks to Rachel for holding in there and solving the secret riddle to save the record!! I'm not sure what the release date is, but stay tuned to Relapse Records or Fuck The Facts for details as they happen. This is a good one folks, a requisite for all connoisseurs of fine grind. The Velodrome record is also complete. Great album, awesome sounds. The easiest and most pleasant session I've ever worked on, hands down. Check out Arctodus Records for release details. KEN mode's new album Mennonite is back from the press, in high style no less. Make sure to attend the Mennonite release party at the Royal Albert Arms on May 30, with Kilbourne and AM Overcast. You can pick up the album as either a CD or 3 x 7" set, both with their own unique artwork. Arctodus is handling the CD version, and No List is supplying the vinyl goodness. I won't have any audio online for the new KEN mode or Fuck The Facts albums until after their respective release dates, but I'm working on getting some Velodrome action together. I forgot to upload it before I left, so hopefully mister Neufeld will step in and help me out. That's it for now. See you in the fall!!
25.03.08 This past weekend I recorded a most excellent album with Velodrome. What an amazingly smooth session. It was awesome. Everything went off without a hitch, and it sounds REALLY GOOD. If I do say so myself. Success!!!
04.02.08 I had my first mixing session with Sheldon and Dan of Cheering For The Bad Guy, who are a bluegrass tinged country group from here in Winnipeg. It was a lot of fun! One of my first attended mixes in a while. I enjoy having the band around when I'm mixing. It can really expedite the process, especially if they're the picky sort. You can guage a persons opinion so much better when they are actually in the room with you. Some of us were hung over, so we drank tasty coffee and enjoyed some surprise mandolin treats. It's also nice to have a break from the relentless onslaught of grind I've been subjecting myself to lately. I love it, but one does get fatigued after a while. I'm not used to this kind of exercise. Nonetheless, the Fuck The Facts album is coming along well, and is nearing completion. We had some delays; several were routine border protocol, a few were our own fault. We remain realtively unscathed as of yet, and I still have a job, so I can't complain. KENmode is putting the finishing sprinkles on their new full-length Mennonite, which now is now slated to be released as a 3 seven- inch set on No List Records - just in time for the bands European tour. Randy Ortiz has come up with some thick artwork riffs that elegantly round out this delicious collectors edition. L'viv will be recording in March with Rudy Rempel, formerly of Chemical Sound in Toronto. We continue to court our good friend Cam for some bass playing action, but our schedules remain somewhat incompatible. One day my prince will come... The Prince of Mince, that is!! ha ha...
29.01.08 ProTools quote of the day: "could not complete your request because magic id does not match" I always knew technology had nothing to do with it. It's more about spells & curses. Mostly curses. Grine-coor done killed my computer.
08.01.08 I've begun the website updates by getting rid of some clutter. The menu has been streamlined, and I ditched the reviews section. I hadn't updated it for months (years??) and all of that stuff is easily found online. I figured I'd save myself the hassle and nix it. Next up, a whole bunch of picture updates.
14.11.07 omigod, number four!!! Four L'viv posts in a row! December Seventh, 2007! At the Albert! Again! With Alana and Erica = Poo, Ham, and KEN mode!! Yeah!! Still more to come...
29.10.07 Third L'viv post in a row. How auspicious. We are playing at the Albert on Friday, November 2 with Electro Quarterstaff and Velodrome. We'll be opening things up. Got lots of other exciting news, but it will have to wait a bit. Soon you will know.
26.09.07 Much like my last post, this one is about a L'viv in-store. This time, at War On Music on Saturday, October 13th. 7pm. Be there. If you want. I also played a gig with Greg Macpherson at the Harvest Moon Festival. It was my first time at the fest. What a beautiful part of Manitoba. I didn't get to stay for long, but I managed to get in a game of bocce. First time with that, too. I'll try anything once.
27.08.07 L'viv is playing yet again this week, at a last minute in-store extravaganza on Thursday, August 30, at Music Trader on Osborne.
14.08.07 Well, there's been a bit of a change in plans... A strange turn of events has taken us to Mexico. Nonetheless, progress is being made, and the album sounds really good so far. Not sure how long we'll be here, though. Hopefully I get back in time to play the show on the 25th.
04.08.07 If you need me, I'll be here doing this for the next little while. Meantime, you can look forward to the Lint / Velodrome / L'viv show that's coming up on August 25th.
01.08.07 Congrats there, Harrold! Good work, Pants!
23.07.07 New Under Pressure songs up in the audio section!
16.07.07 Details have been finalized for the Fuck The Facts record I will be working on next month. We will be heading into Liverpool Court Studios (formerly Sound Of One Hand) in Ottawa. Soon to come: pic update. Hopefully before I leave. That's the plan, anyway. Guess we'll see.
10.07.07 The KEN mode session went really well! We tracked all of the instruments, now we just have to do vocals. All of the songs turned out realy nice writing-wise...if you didn't know, the band wrote the bulk of the material on the album in the two weeks prior to recording. Quite the endeavor! It's some weird sounding stuff, more stripped down in some ways than previous KM efforts, but with more intricate arrangements (ie: several different guitar tones...and, a telecaster!! woo!) It all has kind of a neat swagger to it. Now we just have to record the vocals. Things worked out well at the Prairie Recording Co., and Cam was just a plain 'ol sweetheart. He showed me a really cool technique for close-micing a guitar cabinet with a ribbon mic that I think will be come a regular part of my repertoire.
18.06.07 Next week I will be heading over to the Prairie Recording Company with KEN mode to start working on their new album. Jahmeel is in town and the writing marathon has begun. I'm looking forward to my first time at PRC, and I really hope we get to use the factory... he he he... There is also some new music for you to check out in the audio section...a couple of tracks from the new Somaphore album. When you're tired of all the noisy 4-track recordings I've been doing lately, give your ears a break and check out the string quartet on "Goodbye My Friends"! Then go listen to the 4-track stuff one more time. It's good for your health.
07.06.07 We have a new independent music store here in Winnipeg called War On Music, at 333 Gary Street. Go check them out!! The also do affordable screenprinting and photocopying, perfect for band merch and show posters!
14.05.07 I'm super tired, but really wanted to fill you in on how things went at S+R v9. All that I can muster at this point is a list. Things that happened to me at Send + Receive : -recorded
a bunch of inspiring performances More to come later, perhaps, but for now - bon nuit, as they say.
08.05.07 This week I will be recording the performances at the Send + Receive Festival. For more info & a full listing of events, check out the S+R website.
26.04.07 Soooo if any of you fine people tried downloading that L'viv stuff on the audio page, you will have been prompted for a password...that you probably don't have. I forgot to move the files out of the secure part of my site to a more accessible location...whoops. A thousand apologies. I've fixed the link, so check it out! It's good stuff!! I recorded some awesome grind
last week... a quick 4-track demo for a new band here in town called Also, the Somaphore album is back from mastering, so I'll have a couple of tracks up from that real soon.
11.04.07 I am now the second stand-in drummer for dadadada:LAZERS. Spaceship was the first replacement, but he got attacked by robots so we left him for dead. We'll be playing a few shows this spring / summer, then it's bye bye lazers 'cause Tom is going off to school. In anticipation, I have stripped down my drumkit to even less than the bare essentials. You can see the result as early as this Friday, April 13 at the Collective. Only two sleeps! In other news, the live Kittens stuff is all but in the can...Shawn has added it to the pot with a bunch of other audio from the Kittens archive and is cooking up some sort of delicious movie. Now we just need to figure out the details for the No List release. I have recently demoed some songs from my band L'viv...which has recently been pared down from a duo to just me. Not one to be discouraged by such things, I pulled out the 4-track & recorded a few songs all by myself. You can hear a couple of them over on the audio page. If you want more, drop me a line and I'll hook you up with the rest of them.
29.03.07 It's been a busy month! The Under Pressure album has been recorded, and I will be starting the mix today. The session was broken up into two parts - one at MCM studio, and another at a miscellaneous house that shall remain namless. I recorded a lot of blackmail, and liberated some shrubbery. It was awesome.
24.02.07 Just finished recording vocals with Julia for the Gorgon album. Hmmm, I guess this is the first I've mentioned this. Well, if you must know, we recorded all the music early this month at the Glass House, and now that the vox are done it's off to mixy land! I'll be heading into the studio next weekend with Under Pressure to record a new full-length. This will be the first recording since Pat left the band, and should be pretty darn fun. More fun than when Pat was around, ha ha! Just kidding buddy, we miss ya. We have ditched the idea of recording at Jason's place due to an abundance of cats at his house, and an abundance of allergies in both myself & Cam. Instead, we'll be heading to MCM studios. This is another first - so far I've only recorded some vocals there, so it'll be intersting to see how it stacks up as a drum room. I'll let you know how it pans out.
08.02.07 More audio for your listening pleasure...located in the audio section. There are a couple of tunes from Winnipeg's favourite no-wave band dadadada:LAZERS, some crossbow grind from the western prairies courtesy of Think Don't Pray, and also the other KEN mode song that I meant to post months ago but somehow didn't manage to do until just now.
01.02.07 There are two songs from the new Hide Your Daughters album up in the audio section. Really good stuff! Check it out!
30.01.07 Been a hectic couple of weeks, but I'm getting things done. Querkus has sorted out their drummer issues and are back on track - I helped them out a bit this weekend getting some nice drum sounds. All I have to say is this: Royer R-121. Wow. I'm also mixing an EP for Minority Justice League, which should be in the can in a few days. Really energetic stuff, draws from a lot of different influences. A mix of punk, metal, and old thrash, but they lean pretty heavily on the punk. Fun stuff to work on!! And finally, the Hide Your Daughters album is DONE. Man, does this thing sound good, if I do say so myself. I will be posting sound files shortly so that you don't have to listen to crappy myspace mp3s to get a feel for it.
16.01.07 The show on Saturday was awesome! Kursk played a wicked set, I got beer spilled all over me by Spaceship, Big Trouble In Little China played some new tunes and I got to see Jeff play with them for the first time. Nice work, Jeff! Putrescence was even more brutal than usual with a double guitar attack...welcome back, Jean-Louis! Think Don't Pray defied all odds and several broken guitar and bass strings to hit us with some awesome oil-field crossbow grind. It was great to see you guys again! Thanks for making the trip!!
08.01.07 You'll be happy to know that everything turned out great recording those two shows that Kittens played on the No List NYE weekend. Many thanks to Mark Chaplin who saved the day and rented me his mic splitter at the last moment right as I was about to totally freak out about the recording. Things would've been very different otherwise. A thousand thank-yous to Mark! This weekend my good friends in Think Don't Pray will be coming into town all the way from Calgary to play a show with Putrescence, Big Trouble In Little China, and Kursk. Saturday January 13 at the Albert. But, you already saw the poster on the way in, I reckon. It will soon be time for the annual recording of my pals in Under Pressure. They're getting ready to make another record (With their two new guitarists! Count 'em, two!) in March. This one will be lovingly crafted at the Penner household, so that we can be closer to the fridge. In the further future (this fall or thereabouts), I will be recording Fuck The Facts. This project will see me transplanted to Ottawa or Gatineau or some other weird place near the Ontario/Quebec border for the duration of the recording. My wish is coming true, I get to do more traveling! Yeah!!
27.12.06 Gonna be recording Kittens this weekend. Trying to find a mic splitter. No luck so far. Well, at least not anything in my price range. Ah well. The search continues... I may take a more old school approach instead.
07.12.06 Why hello there! Long time no see. It's been an interesting month and a bit since my last post, culminating with what was possibly the weirdest answering machine message I've ever received. I got home yesterday and found six messages waiting for me. Four of them are pertinent to this story. The first one was from Walter, the landlord of a rehearsal space I rent with the folks from Kursk and Anthem Red. It was a short message; he just asked me to call him. I assumed it was because I owed him money. The second message was from my friend Morgan (the guitar player in Kursk). She had a weird conversation with Walter earlier that night, and needed to talk to me about it. This is when I started to become more suspicious. Something was going on. The third message was another one from Walter, this time with a slightly more urgent tone. "Jeez, he must be kinda miffed at me," I thought. I resolved to go pay the man tomorrow, still wondering what was up with Morgan...did he freak out on her because I haven't paid him yet? Did something else happen? The suspense was thick and soupy around my answering machine. The next message was from Andrea (the bass player in Kursk). It went something like this: "Hi Craig, it's Andrea calling... uhhh...Walter just called and told me Econoline Crush wants our jam space...he wants me to tell him like right now if they can have it, so...I don't know what to do. " Get serious. It's true, though. Frankly, I was surprised that EC is even still together...
28.10.06 Not only have I added some info to the about section, but I've also put the services section online, as well as a new rates section. Hooray for updates! In other news, I recently wrapped up recording for the new Hide Your Daughters album (finally), so now it's on to mixy land. I also started working with Querkus on their new album. Up next: getting the recording diary online so I can tell you all about those sessions. Yeeeessss, another website update to procrastinate!
09.10.06 There are seven new songs up in the audio section! Two each from Anthem Red, Big Trouble In Little China, and Under Pressure, plus one from a band called Neptune's Convoy that I discovered hiding out in the archives. I was glad to find it, it's one of my favorite location recordings...it was done at what is currently the Rag Picker's Annex - back then it was just an unheated jam space, now it's a multi-purpose venue of sorts. I've also revamped the whole section a bit, with two really vague categories plus a "new" section...just to make things a little easier. A trail of cookie crumbs to the treasure. In addition to the audio section re-tooling, I've streamlined the photos section by removing the show pics. Since the inception of this site, I've only posted photos from four shows...I must have shots from at least 15 - 20 more shows sitting on my computer, waiting for me to never get around to posting them. I figured that they weren't entirely relevant, and I should probably spend my time on other more important parts of the site that I have and equally hard time keeping updated...(ahem...services section, anyone? Sheesh.) You can also expect to see more detailed accounts of sessions I'm working on here in the news section. A recording diary of sorts. Keep watching for the first entry! Hopefully it'll make things a little more interesting around here.
15.09.06 Holy crap, the Anthem Red album is DONE! Yeah! Whew. I think everything turned out very nicely. Come down to the West End Cultural Center on October 7th for their album release show, with guests The Paperbacks and Ian LaRue. Oh, how I love closure!
The list of things to do continues: Think Don't Pray is getting mixed like crazy. I'm using one of those hand-held beaters, as opposed to the electric variety. Totally brutal. The new Somaphore album is having lots of slap-echo applied to each and every vocal track. Jeff will be recording some vocals for the new Hide Your Daughters record. He'll decide he doesn't like them and will proceed to re-record them four times over before being satisfied.
...It doesn't end there!! This month I'll also be moonlighting with dadadada:LAZERS (September 23rd to be exact, for a performance at the Inter-media Arts Alliance Conference - 3rd floor, Art Space Building in the Exchange)
Busy times!
04.09.06 OK, the audio section is back up! And with it there are two (count 'em, two!) new Electro Quarterstaff songs from their upcoming Willowtip debut - Gretzky. You get to hear it early! Come on out to their album release show on October 13th and get the whole album before it officially hits stores on October 24th.
01.09.06 New and improved audio goodies are almost ready. I figured I might as well just get it done. But it's not done yet. I just have to find time to finish the job! As noted in the audio section, things should be back up by the 7th. Thanks for being patient with the downtime. In other news, my new band L'viv is playing at the Albert on Saturday, September 9th, so mark your calendars everyone.
28.08.06 Well, the Anthem Red album is well under way, but my computer just can't keep up. Today I am heading out into the land of technology to obtain a new trusty steed for my audio travels. Wow, I can't wait. Yeesh. The Electro Quarterstaff album is done, and man does it sound good! Stay tuned for a song or two that will be posted on the audio page. Speaking of the audio page, I have decided to do away with those shit-awful audio files they call "MP3" in favour of actual PCM files. This is all for your listening pleasure, folks! No more artifacts in your lovely audio! I may implement a FLAC option as well, but we'll see. At any rate, it will be a while yet before I get around to this - on account of me being bogged down at the moment - but it's something to look forward to anyway.
22.08.06 I just got back from Alberta where I was recording some wicked crossbow grind, courtesy of Calgary's own Think Don't Pray. What a great time! Except for the three days it took to make the computer functional. Ugh. Well, we made it happen in the end. I wasn't actually worried at any point, just annoyed. I've worked with computers long enough to know that eventually they just capitulate. It was a great little holiday, nonetheless. There was also lots of tasty food (I commandeered the kitchen) and good company. I felt right at home. The recording is sounding great, and I believe it is destined for two different splits - one with Kursk, and another the details of which I can't recall at this time. I'll fill you in when I get informed. Thanks for the times, TDP (and Krystal & Laura too)!!!
12.08.06 Check out the reviews section for some words about KEN mode's new album Reprisal.
02.08.06 I'm currently obtaining refs, via compewter, for the third revision of the new BTILC record. It sounded great right off the bat, but we ended up making some changes to one of the songs as well as modifying one of the edits. I I really learned to appreciate the fact that - in addition to obtaining a general euphony - mastering is important for catching simple mix anomalies that you just plain missed in the first place. I think we've got it all ironed out. JJ Golden is taking the helm of the mastering ship, you can find him at Golden Mastering where he's making records the best they can be on a daily basis. Also tonight, Jeff and I attempted to start recording vocals for the upcoming Hide Your Daughters record. Things didn't quite pan out. I'm having trouble figuring out just where we'll end up doing them, but I'm sure a solution will present itself. Oh Private Ear, we miss you!
31.07.06 Here's the haps for the past week... -scored a gig mixing the new Anthem Red album. This is gonna be a fun one! I'm looking forward to getting started. -dadadada: LAZERS ' second EP came into the world over the weekend. It was good times at the Glass House, eating way too many cookies and other tasty treats. We recorded a bit of music between bites. Farewell to Glen, may your travels bring you back this way soon.
22.07.06 The Electro Quarterstaff album is almost done. Just ironing out some kinks. Meanwhile, Dan's somewhere overseas eating tasty vegan food and playing a bunch of rental / borrowed drums. I hope he likes what we're doing here. Say Dan, if your reading this - the mix you have is no longer current. But hey, how are the toms?? You know how it is. I'm going into the studio tomorrow (read: today) with Hide Your Daughters to get the guitars recorded for what will be the only commercially available recording to date where Shane plays a blast beat. Don't get your hopes up, it's only a measure long. zing.
27.06.06 Oh heck, I'm still having trouble keeping this ship afloat. Let's see, what's been going on lately... KEN mode test pressings arrived...they sound excellent, I'm totally sold on DMM. If only they cut the spirals in those suckers...oh well. Just finished mastering the latest Mico album called "Our Living Language" for digital release by G7...not sure what my stance is on MP3-only releases...seems kinda strange to me. It sure was a fun record to work on, though! Nice songs + good recording = happy craig. My band Prague will be playing the KEN mode / Under Pressure dual album release show. Come check it out!
20.06.06 Well, the BTILC album has been sent to be mastered, and I'm waiting on test pressings for the KEN mode record. Should be in next week. The CDs came in last week, and they look great. Can't wait to see that artwork on a record sleeve! Yeah! Also, there are some new goodies up in the photos section. I still have an immense backlog of stuff to put online, but procrastination is taking it's toll on things. You know how it is.
11.06.06 So I'm working on this mix...everything is sounding good except for the kick drum. I've spent way too many hours over the past week or so tweaking everything I can think of. I exhausted pretty much every eq and compression option that I have at my disposal. I even tried triggering it in spite of myself. That sounded like total crap, of course. Triggers are such a waste of time. Then today, I'm sitting down to it again, totally dreading the impending hours of searching for a solution that doesn't seem to exist. Suddenly, I decide to hit the phase reverse button on the kick channel. Holy shit, there's the kick drum. It sounds great. It's totally there. Why, I ask you, did it take me a week to figure that out? That should've been one of the first things I did. It's funny how sometimes your brain totally sabotages your work. weepsk.
23.05.06 This has been the fortnight of finishing up. So many projects coming to an end, some after a long span of work-time, and others that didn't quite have to travel as far...and there's still a few simmering on the stove. We're waiting for test pressings of the KEN mode album to arrive right now. July 25 is the official release date, and I think we should have the vinyl in hand just in time. It's gonna be real nice to hear this stuff on wax! I'm also excited for technical reasons - this is the first vinyl project I've done that's being mastered with the DMM process. Should be interesting! Also coming to an end (finally) is the Under Pressure LP. This is quite possibly the most drawn-out project I've ever worked on. We recorded the vocals three times and mixed it twice, but I'm getting some pretty good closure out of the deal. The new mix sounds awesome, and the stuff that Cam fixed up vocal-wise really put the icing on the cake. Now, the trick will be to get it pressed before they leave for Europe! Yikes....
08.05.06 Finished up with Electro Quarterstaff at Private Ear last week. Private Ear is finished too. For now, anyway. It's sort of a sad time, but hey, easy come easy go. Lloyd and Neil will be opening a new room as soon as they get things figured out. I'm glad that I got to be as involved as I was, and I'm really looking forward to the new place. For the first time ever I had some serious trouble with RADAR, maybe it was protesting the impending move. Other than that, the EQ session was great. Definitely a good bunch of folks to work with. These are some strange songs...
22.04.06 OK, finally some new stuff to listen to here. If you head on over to the audio page, you will find a song from the new KEN mode record, a new Kursk song, and a not so new Husk song - Husk is old news by now, but I finally have the space on my server to put this online. So here you go. It's a good one. RIP Husk.
18.04.06 Phase two of the Somaphore project went off without a hitch yesterday...we recorded a string quartet and a woodwind quintet. Man, that was fun. Thanks to all the players for making everything go smoothly!! On a heavier note, the KEN mode record is DONE, that's right DONE! I'll be posting a couple of audio clips very soon, make sure to check them out. Very good stuff. You will like it.
10.04.06 Weekend number two of April witnessed the first time I have ever finished a session early - on Sunday Hide Your Daughters walked out of the studio just after lunch time. Whadda you know. Everything went very well, but at one point I got really annoyed with my setup on the drums... we changed a couple things and it got straightened out. I just had a momentary lapse of patience...heh... It was a very streamlined session, lots of keeper first takes and minimal fixes needed after the fact. We only had to do a few punch-ins, including one for Shane that he nailed the first time...nicely done, l'il guy. We ate some nice Thai food, checked out the beautiful spring scenery, had a good time. It was great working with Jahmeel...he's gonna be traveling away to one of the more favourable climate areas we have available to us...sad to see him go. I kinda wish I was going too...I really do pine for the warmth and the mountains.
03.04.06 Just finished up with Phase One of the Somaphore project. The session went amazingly well! It was my first time working with Mr Dave Pankratz, and it was certainly a pleasure to have him in the studio. Elliot held his own remarkably well, amidst playing way too much bass for one person this weekend. A recording session and two important gigs didn't even faze his super-human stamina...well done, Mr. Britton. And Tim...well, what can I say? His left hand slapped me silly. Thanks guys, it was a blast!
20.03.06 Well, KEN mode is officially in the can. As I type this I am preparing their record to be delivered to Nick at New Alliance East to be mastered. I think it turned out really nicely, and am quite interested to hear Nick's take on things. The Prague show on Saturday was really great, thank you to everyone who showed up to hear some good tunes and to support the Mondragon. And, as per usual, I am somewhat slow in getting new pictures up on this here site...rest assured, there are lots of pics to come and I'm gonna try my best to get 'em up soon.
27.02.06 The KEN mode record is almost done. Jesse & Shane will be coming by tonight to put the finishing touches on things. Tomorrow Putrescence will be heading over to approve the master of their new record and to put the icing on the cake in the form of samples and sequence. A fine record indeed, recorded by Winnipeg's own Jared Weiss.. Thank you Jared for triggering the kick drum in a way that is not super annoying!! Hooray!!! Seriously, I'm not even being sarcastic, that's a good kick trigger there. There's also a few new projects looming on the horizon: Somaphore (Tim Friesen) will be starting his record in March. It will be completed in short spurts over several months to accommodate the many schedules of the musicians involved. I'm really excited about this one - there's gonna be woodwinds!! Yeah!! Hide Your Daughters will be starting work on their new record hopefully sometime in April, as will Electro Quarterstaff. However, all that could change depending on the Calendar Gods of the studio. Apparently we're vying with another group for the same dates. I dunno who they are, but I'll bet we could whup 'em in a fair fight. Then again, fighting won't change the mind of the Calendar Gods. Dammit. We'll see how it pans out.
09.02.06 Jesse has approved the vocal takes we did, so now it's time to mix! Hooray! Should be smooth sailing, everything sounds amazing as it is! I also recently received the vocals for the BTILC album from Matt, so that's gonna get underway real soon as well. Other than that, I'm just continuing with some website tweaks. I now have a great FTP server (courtesy of BlueHost), so file transfers are a piece of cake.
way later on 01.02.06 OK, the new and improved audio page is on line. Well, it's not that improved, there's just more recent stuff to listen to. Aesthetically it's pretty much the same old crap.
01.02.06 Ok, it's February and the audio page is still down. But I have a good excuse! I switched hosting companies and am in the process of transferring everything over to my new server.
24.01.06 I just added some reviews of the Absent Sound album, and cleaned up the reviews section. Still doing vocals with Jesse. Still waiting for BTILC's vocal tracks from Matt. I hear they're done. This is the word on the street, total hearsay. The audio page is now down for maintenance, and will be back online by the first of February.
12.01.06 Holy crap, there's actually an "about" page now!! That's right, I've started updating! Nothing too exciting other than that, though. Just a wee update in the links and clients sections. The main thing I'm doing right now is behind the scenes. Y'see, I'm using a wsywig editor to create and maintain this site (that's right, home made fresh-from-the-oven internut loaf) and I finally realized just how many redundant tags it puts in the code. Good lord, I'm gonna have my finger glued to the backspace key for weeks. I'm sure there's an easier way around this. Unfortunately I don't know from web design, so for now I'll just be a little more attentive to the markup. Maybe one day I'll take some internut lessons.
03.01.06 Just finished up in the studio with KEN mode last week...it turned out amazingly well. Those guys are professionals. No thanks to Manitoba Hydro, who shut down power to the whole building while we were recording and then took two hours to get it back online. Assholes. In keeping with tradition, Jesse opted to record his vocals at a later date. Thankfully, we will be doing this straight away with the aid of Mr. Hannah's basement. 10-Q Mr. H!! I'm sad to announce that I will not be recording Putrescence's new full length. Oh well, I was looking forward to it, but I'm sure it will turn out nicely without my help. I can't wait to hear it!
04.12.05 Hey folks, long time no news. I know, I know. I'm the epitome of procrastination. Here's what's going on these days...:
- I'll be heading into the studio at the end of December with KEN mode to record their second album, to be released in the first half of 2006 by Escape Artist Records . - Kursk and I just wrapped up mixing for their second recording, and hot damn does it sounds good. I'm quite pleased with this one. I'll keep you posted about release details as I get 'em! - I finished mixing Arctic Circle's second album after it was shelved for a couple of years. Still sounds great -grim bush metal at it's finest. Profound Lore will be releasing this in early 2006. - The self-titled Under Pressure EP was finally wrapped up just in time for tour...then, due to some problems at the cd manufacturer, it was delayed and they didn't get ahold of it until after they'd been on the road for a few days. Check out their website to see how the tour is going, and stay tuned for a vinyl version of this fine release, to be brought to you by Ugly Pop Records. We'll also be wrapping up their new LP when they get back from tour. - Big Trouble In Little China will soon be recording vocals for their record...heck, they might already be done! Well, probably not. Matt (BTILC drummer) will be handling vox recording duties, and then it all gets tossed back at me to slap together. I can't believe I'm leaving this in the hands of a drummer. Oh wait, I'm a drummer too... - Speaking of which, I have just recently started two new bands! One is called Tachyon, and features myself on drums and Morgan from Kursk on guitar. T'other is yet unnamed, and includes Bazan & The Beave on guitars, with me on the drums again. Maybe our buddy Chris will pick up the bass spot when he rolls back into town. -In the not so distant future I will be working with everybody's favorite pop band Half Court Prayer, minimalist orchestra pop super group Somaphore, and gore professionals Putrescence. No, the Putrescence/Embalming Theater split is not out yet. Maybe it will finally surface after we record their next album. Whatever.
It's gonna be a weird spring, a strange mix of happy sounds and brutal sounds. Keeps one on their toes, doesn't it?
28.09.05 The session with Big Trouble In Little China this past weekend went remarkably well. Eight songs in one day. Wow. They were super tight, and everything wast real smooth. Hands down the best one-day session I've ever done.
19.09.05 I've finally completed the first round of updates for the site...check out the photos page for some pics of the most recent Under Pressure and Kursk sessions. Next up, the audio page! New audio goodies coming soon for all of you nice folk out there.
15.09.05 Well, so much for the Ham record...at least for now. The project is on hold for the moment. Oh well. Maybe someday soon. However, I will be taking on some tech duties for the Send and Receive Festival here in Winnipeg, so I'll be plenty busy with that in October.
13.09.05 The Kursk recording went very well this past weekend. Still have vocals to do, though. Story of my life. Whatever. I actually have photos from the session, and will be posting them soon. The Under Pressure record is in it's third revision...hopefully it's last. In keeping with the recent abundance of UxPx work, Cam and I will begin to tie into the vocals for their EP this week as well.
04.09.05 Just got word that I will be recording Ham's new record, hopefully in October. Good work? Good work.
21.08.05 Oh god, I'm falling so far behind with updates...sigh. Just finished recording DaDaDaDa: Lazers' posthumous EP. They were a good band. We'll miss them. The Under Pressure LP is almost mixed, but we're still hammering out some details. Other than that, I just have to stop procrastinating and start working on this site. Oh yeah, and Prague is playing on the 7th of September. See our website for details.
22.07.05 I recently received the Ungoliant tapes. Morgan and I give it our stamps of approval. Very grim stuff. Speaking of Morgan, I will be recording her band Kursk again in the early part of September, and later that month Big Trouble In Little China and I will be heading into the studio as well. The Under Pressure LP is coming along nicely also, vocals are almost done, and a mix is soon to follow.
10.07.05 Change of plans... No longer am I mixing the upcoming Propagandhi record, as Chris has decided to work on it himself. A disappointment, indeed, but I understand (probably more than anyone) the need to have total control over a project. I'm sure it's in capable hands. So, while he's freaking out over meeting the deadline, I get to enjoy some free time! Ha! Sucka.
07.06.05 -Putrescence now have a video out for "Raised In An Oscillated Brain Tumour"...check it out on the No Escape Records website under the "videos" menu ...truly a fantastic piece of work by renowned film maker Richie Arthurson. -Yet another project on the horizon...I received confirmation that I will be working on a release with the Ungoliant from Victoria, BC. This should be a fun record - it was all recorded on cassette 4-track, one of my favorite formats. Tasty analogue goodness. Y'know, whether it's a regular ol' cassette or 2", it just feels better. That being said, I do most of my work on computers. Oh, the pain of life.
03.06.05 Aversionline just reviewed a few things that I've done recently...check out the reviews page for new opinions on Husk, Kursk, and a new review of the Habits EP by Under Pressure.
30.05.05 And it looks like June will be no less busy than May. I've got my plate full with a couple of new projects...I will be mastering a compilation for G7 Welcoming Committee called "Take Penacilin Now". This comp will feature all of the bands that have been on G7 at one time or another. Additionally, I will be mixing the upcoming Propagandhi album. Lemme tell ya folks, this is gonna be a fantastic record...what more can I say? Start looking forward to this one, folks.
24.05.05 May was incredibly busy. Mostly with moving and unpacking and working. Under Pressure was in the studio for a week with me, working on material for a full length and and EP. Very prolific fellows. It was a ridiculous time filled with ethnic snacks and weird noises and other miscellaneous jack-assedness. As soon as Jason gets his photos developed, I'll post 'em here. There are some good ones... Speaking of posting stuff, I'm getting behind in that department...let's see, what do I have to put online...?
Yikes, procrastination takes it's toll. And soon enough there will be Absent Sound audio treats for you too! And a new Time Kills Everything album! Hooray! Stay tuned...
25.04.05 I just finished recording a new album for the Absent Sound, to be released this summer on No List Records. Super fun guys, really smooth session, lots of tasty treats. Thanks to Tom and Kristen for making us feel at home. Upcoming projects: -May: Under Pressure - sessions for a new full length plus EP -June: Putrescence - recording for a 7" EP "Scooped Out Eyeballs" on Last House on the Right Records I will soon post some audio goodies from Greg MacPherson's new record "Night Flares", tracks from the Husk EP, some stuff from Putrescence's split with Embalming Theatre, and also a couple of things from the latest Fuck The Facts release. Stay tuned!!
26.03.05 The show on Thursday was awesome, thanks to Mike and Jon for hosting things, and thank you Flint for carting our crap around town! This may be the last news update for a while...
17.03.05 What a busy month!! The Husk EP turned out really well. It was a super fun session, everything went very smoothly and the sandwiches were delicious. Check out the photos section to see how much fun we had. I will be recording The Absent Sound in April, stay tuned for more details... Prague has a website: www.praguelovesyou.com . There are current tour details up there, and you can also check out some MP3s from the new album. The show on the 25th has been moved to the 24th, so adjust your calendars. More details as I get 'em.
02.03.05 I have finally aquired a space! I can't believe I did it, but it's official. Gonna be moving in at the end of the month. I'll let you know how things progress.... In other news, Prague is playing a couple of shows this month: One on Thursday, March 17th at the Albert with Slattern, Anthem Red, and Husk. Then, on Thursday March 24th we're playing a CAL-3 benefit at Spaceship's house. Gonna be fun! Speaking of Husk, I will be heading up to High North with those fine fellows on Sunday (March 6th) to work on their first recording. I am very much looking forward to it!
Here's a tour update for Prague: Work Harder and Always Be Sorry Western Canada Tour 2005 w/ Kursk
* Friday April 1st Saskatoon SK Kursk, Prague, Mechanical Separation,
Tombstone Diaries, Narcissistic @ the Basement
22.02.05 I posted some pics from Prague's set at the Anti-Desolation Fest. Thanks to Jean for the photos! I'll have some photos from the recording session up soon. It's been a crazy week, scrambling to finish stuff up, attempting to catch up with my work. And, it's only Tuesday.
14.02.05 More Under Pressure reviews in the Reviews section.
13.02.05 Prague played the Anti-Desolation Fest last night. Our set went pretty well, but my kit was falling apart even more than usual. Nonetheless, I think we pulled it off not to badly. Slattern played an amazing set, and I got to see DiBiase for the first time ever - I'm glad I finally did! They're fantastic. Those Ryckman kids know where it's at. Thank you to everyone for coming, and for sticking around 'til the end. We really appreciate your support! And, an especialé 10-Q goes out to my pal Nancy from Vancouver and my sister Leana for coming to the show. Glad you made it!
11.02.05 -More photo updates!!
10.02.05 -I've updated the Photos and Audio sections, and added a Reviews section. If anyone has any reviews or pictures that I can post, please send 'em my way. -Prague is playing at the Anti-Desolation Fest this Saturday, February 12 at 114 Spence Street. Bands at 8pm. We are also going to be recording next week so that we can have some merch to schlep on tour, and shirts will available soon as well. -I was speaking with my friend Cam, and it seems that Under Pressure are planning a comprehensive recording session for early spring. I will be on board as their trusty engineer yet again. Thanks fellas, you know I love you!
08.02.05 -Husk will be recording with me at High North early March, and Equal In Dust will be going into Private Ear later on in the month. -Prague will be heading up north as well next week to record for our debut EP, just in time for our Western Canada tour with Kursk. Thanks to Kursk for inviting us to come along! Speaking of tour, here's the tentative dates: Apr 1 - Saskatoon
03.02.05 -Finished up vocals with Todd on Tuesday. Everything is sounding real good, now it's time for Mr. Hannah to put his smear on things. -I will be recording Husk in the near future...hopefully at the end of the month, if all goes well. -Prague will be touring in April with Kursk. More details to come...
25.01.05 Well, Prague's first show went really well, despite some technical difficulties. Lots of folks showed up, and Kursk sold many records. Thanks to everyone for coming out!!
19.01.05 -I am recording some vocals for the new Propagandhi record. It looks like this is gonna be a great album. I'm having fun hanging out with Todd 'n' Chronos, eating corn chips and veggie weiners. -Putrescence did their thing in record time last weekend. I absolutely love recording this band. They work so fast! They sound so good! And, they're all super nice folks. Nice folks + sick grind = good times.
03.01.05 Upcoming Projects:
January: -Putrescence will be going back to High North to record tracks for a split 7" with Embalming Theatre. I am looking forward to spending time with Mike A., alone in a secluded cabin. -I will be mixing some material for Fuck The Facts for a 4-way split CD with Narcosis, Archer and Midget Parade for Privileged To Fail Records.
Someday soon: -Head Hits Concrete will be recording for a split 7" with Fuck the Facts in the early part of 2005 -My band Prague will be hitting a studio of some sort in the spring...stay tuned!
Recently Completed Projects:
-Mixed Greg MacPherson's new record, tentatively titled "Night Flares". Wicked album. Greg is an awesome guy, super fun to work with. I was happy to get my hands on something less heavy for a change. -Remastered Fuck The Facts' first record ever, "Mullet Fever". Classic Ontario grind played by some of the nicest people I ever met. -I recently finished a three song EP for Lykeum, after many computer failures and other revisions. After all of the technical hassles and operator error, it turned out real nice. This is Jean's other band. (he's the guitar player in Putrescence) Lykeum is playing on January 28th at the Collective Cabaret with Putrescence, Big Trouble In Little China, Diademigon, and Sleipnir. Proceeds will go to the Canadian Red Cross SE Asia Relief Fund. -Kursk's "Implication EP" 7" record is being co-released by shiny new Winnipeg label CAL-3 and Spiral Objective from Australia, and was recorded at High North late 2004. Come check out the release show Friday, January 21 at the Royal Albert Arms where Kursk will play nice good music and Darcy and I will play our first show ev-er with our wicked-sick band Prague. -The now defunct Dreaming City will be releasing a posthumous 7" EP on Plastic Airlines, a new limited release label run by Scott Thomson of the late Harmless Records. Many thanks to Scott for his infinite patience with this release. -"Mangled, Hollowed Out, And Vomit Filled" by Putrescence is enjoying success at the marketplace. The kids love this stuff. I had the good fortune to record this record last year. I listen to it regularly because it is sooooo good. You should too. -Winnipeg's hardcore
darlings Under Pressure released 2 split 7"s in
2004, one with Blood I Bleed and another with DFA, as well as a 7"
EP titled "Habits". UxPx is gearing up to do an all out full-length
follow up to their 2003 album "Still No Future" on the Sound
Pollution label sometime in the spring of 2005. |
